(last updated June 1, 2020)
The present Bibliography aims to list a representative selection of research publications on The Thousand and One Nights, commonly known in English as The Arabian Nights. The Bibliography's main focus is on publications in European languages, while some important books and articles published in other languages are also listed. Initially based on the bibliography in The Arabian Nights Encyclopedia (Marzolph and van Leeuwen 2004, 811-852), the Bibliography bears witness to the continued international interest in the Nights. Aiming to be comprehensive, but not necessarily exhaustive, the Bibliography is conceived as an ongoing project and is updated at intervals. Most items quoted treat particular aspects of the Nights. In addition to numerous publications bearing a secondary relevance for the study of the Nights, translations of the Nights in international languages are not listed, while a number of them contain important essays discussing the history and character of the Nights. The compiler appreciates comments and critique as well as suggestions for items to be added.
Including references up to the end of 2015, the bibliography is published in print in Arabic Manuscripts of the "Thousand and One Nights" ed. by Aboubakr Chraïbi. Paris: espaces&signes, 2016, pp. 493−564.
In order to enhance the Bibliography's usefulness, I presently aim to link bibliographical items dating from before 1900 as well as recent items in the public domain to the actual texts.
