Original description

Synonyms
Metrioptera saussureana auct.
Metrioptera saussureiana auct.

Identification

Distribution
South-western mountains in Europe (Pyrenees, Vosges, Jura Mountains and southern Alps). This species has been recorded in Germany only twice and both records date from the period 1900-1920. One record is from Feldafing at Lake Starnberg and the other record is from Obersalzberg (Berchtesgaden). In addition, there are populations near Salzburg (probably extinct) and the Pfänder Mountain. Both locations are in Austria, but are directly adjacent to the German border. Thus the species apparently has its northern-most border of distribution in northern Austria and southernmost Bavaria and in this border region has always been rare. Since it has not been seen in Bavaria since the 1920s it must be regarded as extinct in Germany.
