Note: it has erroneously been argued in the past
that the name fuscus Fabricius, 1793 is a junior
homonym of fuscus Pallas, 1773 and therefore it
has been replaced with the junior synonym
discolor. However, fuscus Fabricius, 1793 has been published in
the genus Locusta, whereas fuscus Pallas, 1773
has been published in the genus Gryllus. Thus, no
primary homonymy is present. In addition, fuscus Fabricius, 1793
clearly describes the present species, whereas fuscus Pallas, 1773
describes a rather different species from Russia.
To my knowledge, Gryllus fuscus Pallas,
1773 is currently not assigned to a recognized
species (i.e. it is a nomen dubium) and the two
taxa have never been deemed congeneric. Thus, no
secondary homonymy is present either. The valid
name is therefore Conocephalus fuscus.
