Taxonomy and Phylogeny
In the literature the present family is usually called Spongiphoridae. However, the analysis by Jarvis et al. (2005) suggests that the Spongiphoridae comprises two separate monophyletic groups that are not closely related. One monophyletic group that also contains the type genus Spongiphora is here regarded as the true Spongiphoridae; this family has not yet been recorded from Germany. The second monophyletic group of "spongiphorid" earwigs comprises the traditional subfamilies Labiinae and Nesogastridae. Because they are not closely related to the true Spongiphoridae I regard them here as separate families.
