Subspecies

The
taxonomy of the genus Reticulitermes is
currently unsettled (e.g. Forschler
and Jenkins 1999). The status of a
number of species has been questioned,
but there is currently no comprehensive
revision of this issue. Specifically,
the taxon Reticulitermes santonensis
(described from France) is considered by
several authors as a subspecies or even
as a synonym of the present species
(e.g. Austin
et al. 2005). Given that the
taxonomy of this entire termite group
requires larger efforts of revision, I
currently refrain here from accepting
subspecies or synonymizations.
