Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized. However, the status of the closely related taxa Planuncus finoti (from Algeria) and Planuncus vinzi (from France) is currently unclear, they may be conspecific with Planuncus tingitanus (Bohn et al. 2013).

The genus Planuncus has been erected by Bohn in Bohn et al. 2013. The present species is the type species of Planuncus.

Distribution
The present species is originally a southern European and northern African species that has recently expanded its range northwards. The first record from Germany dates from 2007 and meanwhile the species is recorded from Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz and Hessen (Bohn et al. 2013; Pfeifer 2015).
