Distribution
The native range of this species is restricted to the native range of its hostplant the honey locust Gleditsia triacanthos in the eastern USA. However, this tree species is a popular ornamental plant and has been introduced elsewhere. Consequently, the range of Penestragania apicalis now comprises the eastern and central USA, south-eastern Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria (see Nickel et al. 2013 for current distribution maps).
In Germany the species has been recorded in Baden-Württemberg, Niedersachsen, Brandenburg, Berlin, Thüringen and Sachsen, but only in cities where the host plant is used as ornamental tree along city streets and in parks and botanical gardens.
