Neophilaenus lineatus
Grasschaumzikade

Subspecies
I do not recognize subspecies. However, this taxon is likely a complex of closely related species (see also note below) and thus taxa described as subspecies of the present species probably are separate species.

Original description

Synonyms
Cicada lineata Linnaeus, 1758
Philaenus lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Philaenus lineatus lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Neophilaenus lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Philaenus aterrimus J. Sahlberg, 1871
Neophilaenus aterrimus (J. Sahlberg, 1871)
Philaenus pulchellus J. Sahlberg, 1871
Neophilaenus pulchellus (J. Sahlberg, 1871)
Philaenus lineatus fusca Haupt, 1912
Neophilaenus fuscus (Haupt, 1912)
Philaenus lineatus pallida Haupt, 1917
Neophilaenus pallidus (Haupt, 1917)
Philaenus lineatus danicus Wagner, 1935

Note: The status of the taxa aterrimus, pulchellus, fuscus and pallidus is debated and I therefore provisionally place them all in the synonymy of lineatus. However, they are ecologically and morphologically distinct and are likely separate species. A revision of this taxon complex is urgently necessary.
