Orenaia lugubralis

Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized.

There is substantial disagreement on the status of Orenaia preisseckeri (Rebel, 1903). Some authors regard it as a separate species, while others synonymize it with either Orenaia lugubralis or Orenaia alpestralis. I am not convinced yet by any line of evidence, and therefore consider it a species inquirenda that urgently needs a thorough revision. This taxon, Orenaia preisseckeri, has not yet been recorded from Germany.

Synonyms
Hercyna lugubralis Lederer, 1857
Orenaia lugubralis (Lederer, 1857)
Orenaia conspurcalis De la Harpe, 1864
Orenaia lugubralis albescens Rebel, 1910

Note: For the status of the taxon preisseckeri, please see the comments above under "Subspecies".

Note: This entire genus is in urgent need of a thorough revision. The species in the genus are very variable in wing coloration, but show only slight differences in e.g. genitalia morphology. Thus, the separation of the species is problematic and very debated.

Note: Orenaia lugubralis has previously been erroneously synonymized with Orenaia helveticalis. This was caused by a confused and wrong concept of Orenaia helveticalis in the older literature. The true Orenaia helveticalis and Orenaia lugubralis are clearly separate species.
