This species has a number of subspecies. Only the nominate subspecies is present in Germany.

Distribution
Widely distributed in the palearctic region; in North America with a distinct subspecies (C. p. floridus). The nominate subspecies is distributed in Europe and Asia and two insular forms occur on Corse (C. p. cyrnellus; might represent a separate species) and Iceland (C. p. extinctellus). In Germany recorded from all Bundesländer.
