Catoptria luctiferella

The status of the subspecies of C. luctiferella is unclear. There is no unequivocal feature separating the subspecies, since all are quite variable. Therefore, most authors regard luctuellus (and probably also meridialpina) as a synonym of luctiferella. However, the three forms occur together in northern Italy, and thus some authors even regard them as separate species. It is possible that the forms represent a group of "cryptic species", but for the time being I regard them as subspecies.

Distribution
Both subspecies occur in the Alps and Transsylvania (a third subspecies occurs in Italy). The area of overlap in the Alps is unclear, but at least in northern Italy all forms occur together. In Germany the species is recorded from Bayern, but the subspecies has not been specified.
