Identification
Wing span 16 - 30 mm. A variable species. Forewings dark grey and brownish with lighter and darker markings and a light antemedial line close to the wing base.


Distribution
Widely distributed and common. Europe (without the north), Asia, north western Africa, North America, Australia. In Germany recorded from most Bundesländer, but many records date from before 1980.


Biology
Synanthropic, often a pest species. Larva lives in silken tubes in plant material, but also reported as a pest species from cheese dairies. Larva can live up to two years before pupariation. Imago flies from June to September (the year round in buildings).
