Phalera bucephala
Mondvogel, Mondfleck



Subspecies

Several subspecies are recognized, but the taxonomy is unclear. The type specimen of Linnaeus´ nominal Phalaena bucephala most probably stems from Sweden. The lectotype is phenotypically very similar to typical scandinavian specimens (Schintlmeister 2008). I therefore suggest that the nominate subspecies is the scandinavian subspecies, and that the Central European animals do not belong to the nominate subspecies, but to Phalera bucephala lunula (see synonymy below).

Distribution
Distributed in Europe, north Africa, and through central Asia.
