Distribution

Mainly distributed in southern Europe, but recently also spreading north, probably due to global warming. There are several records of this species in Germany mainly from along the upper Rhine valley, which is climatically most similar to the Mediterranean native range of the species. However, more recently the species has also been recorded from near Gießen (Hessen) (Melaun et al. 2014). This is the northern-most record of this species so far.

Biology

This species is a potential vector of the unicellular parasite Leishmania.
