Identification
Wing span 19 - 24 mm. Quite variable species: ground color mostly light reddish brown. There is one darker and one lighter postmedial line across the fore wing in most specimens. The males have relatively long palps. The females have slightly shortened wings (brachyptery).

 

Distribution
Widely distributed in Europe. A few records from eastern Europe and Asia. Also occurs in north-western Africa and North America. In Germany recorded from all Bundesländer.


Biology
Mostly found on dry meadows or sandy open areas. Flight season June to September. Larvae from August and overwintering to June. Larvae live in silken galleries on mosses (Hypnum), but are also reported to feed on the roots of grasses and other plants (e.g. Lotus, Helianthemum).
