Baptria aethiopata auct. nec Scopoli, 1763 (misidentification)

Note: The valid name of this species should be Baptria tibialata (Huebner, 1799), but I provisionally retain the Esperian name until this species has been nomenclaturally revised. Esper has published the name "Tibiale" already in 1791 (Esper 1791), but only on a plate, without a genus name and without applying binominal nomenclature. Therefore, this name became available only when he later (Esper 1804) also published a proper description and assigned the species to the genus Geometra. In the meantime, Huebner (1799) had already published a valid description using the species-group name tibialata (obviously inspired by Esper´s work). This is therefore the first available species-group name and should be the valid name for the species.

Note: the species-group name aethiopata is often attributed to Heinemann, but this is incorrect. Von Heinemann (1859) does not coin this name as a new name, but cites Scopoli (1763) as the author (he writes after the name the abbreviation "Scp" for Scopoli). Scopoli (1763) describes Phalaena aethiopata on p. 231 and in Fig. 581. I am not aware of the current identity of Scopoli´s Phalaena aethiopata, but it is definitely not identical with Baptria tibiale. Thus, by using Scopoli´s species name for what was in fact Baptria tibiale, Von Heinemann (1859) did not describe a new species, but misapplied the name (a clear misidentification).

Note: The name Phalaena dimidiata is often erroneously attributed to Huebner (1790), but he does not describe the name, but actually cites Fabricius (1787) who on p. 202 describes Phalaena dimidiata, which is the oldest name available for the present species, but is a junior primary homonym and is therefore not valid.
