Note: Aspitates is a misspelling of Aspilates and was originally coined by Treitschke. Treitschke later corrected his error, but most current taxonomists reject his correction as unjustified and regard Aspitates as the correct spelling. Aspilates is a kind of mythical stone that was believed by ancient Arabians to have magical powers. The word is usually regarded as having masculine gender. Its misspelling Aspitates may consequently be inferred to have the same gender, therefore unequivocally adjectival species group names also take the masculine gender (e.g. minimus), but all other species group names are here regarded as nouns in apposition.
