The meaning of the genus name is unclear and therefore it is difficult to establish its grammatical gender. Alcis may represent a variant spelling of Latin "alces" ("moose, elk"), or may be its proper genitive singular. It may also refer to a mythical pair of brothers, the Alcis, that were worshipped as gods by certain Germanic peoples. As such, the word is a plural form. Finally, it might refer to Alkis, the son of Aigyptos, (mythical) king of Egypt. Curtis (1826) does not explain the new name and thus it also may be a name without any special meaning. Note, however, that "jubatus, -a, um" is a proper Latin adjectival form ("having a mane") and therefore must agree in gender with the genus name. Provisionally I use Alcis as a meaningless word of feminine gender in order to preserve the widely used form "jubata" of the species epithet.
