Holcostethus strictus

Specimen photographed in Frankfurt am Main (Hessen) on June 17, 2012.

Subspecies
(1)
Holcostethus strictus strictus (Fabricius, 1803)
(2)
Holcostethus strictus vernalis (Wolff, 1804)

The status of the two taxa is debated. I list them here as subspecies, but they might actually be separate species. Only
Holcostethus strictus vernalis occurs in Germany.

Original description

Synonyms
Synonymy of
Holcostethus strictus vernalis:

Cimex vernalis Wolff, 1804
Holcostethus vernalis (Wolff, 1804)
Holcostethus strictus vernalis (Wolff, 1804)
Peribalus strictus vernalis (Wolff, 1804)

Note: several authors distinguish the genera Holcostethus and Peribalus, whereas others regard the two genera as synonyms. The basis for separating the two genera is the free clypeus in Holcostethus and the covered clypeus in Peribalus (see Belousova 2007). However, this character is not constant in those species assigned to Peribalus and thus cannot serve as a valid apomorphy for Peribalus. In addition, the larvae of the present species (that is assigned to "Peribalus") have a free clypeus as well; thus the covering of the clypeus is a developmental trait that may be encoded in the genome of most species, but is activated only in the imaginal phase of some species. Other criteria that are sometimes used to separate the two genera are small differences in genital morphology. However, if anything, they can only separate species, but not genera. Therefore, I do not accept Holcostethus and Peribalus as separate genera and regard Peribalus as a junior synonym of Holcostethus.
