Note: M. pygmaeus and M. melanotoma are extremely similar species and their status as separate species has been debated. Martinez-Cascales et al. (2006) have presented data to support the status as bonae species of both taxa. Nevertheless, reliable identification using morphological characters is almost impossible; this has led to a number of misidentifications.
