Macrolophus melanotoma

Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized.

Original description

Synonyms
Phytocoris melanotoma A. Costa, 1853
Macrolophus melanotoma (A. Costa, 1853)
Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner, 1951
Macrolophus pygmaeus auct. nec Rambur, 1839 (misidentification)

Note: M. pygmaeus and M. melanotoma are extremely similar species and their status as separate species has been debated. Martinez-Cascales et al. (2006) have presented data to support the status as bonae species of both taxa. Nevertheless, reliable identification using morphological characters is almost impossible and misidentifications are therefore very frequent.

Identification

Distribution
This species is officially not recorded from Germany. However, since the species pair M. pygmaeus and M. melanotoma are almost impossible to separate using morphological characters, it is possible that the species occurs in Germany, but has been misidentified as M. pygmaeus. Thus, all future records of specimens of this species pair in Germany should be carefully checked for their identity.
