Chrysopilus nubecula

Subspecies
Some authors recognize a subspecies C. n. binotatus. I do not recognize subspecies of C. nubecula (see Synonyms below).

Original description
Fallén, 1814

Synonyms
Leptis nubecula Fallén, 1814
Chrysopilus nubecula (Fallén, 1814)
Chrysopilus nubecula nubecula (Fallén, 1814)
Chrysopilus nubeculus (Fallén, 1814)
Chrysopilus auricollis auct. nec Meigen
, 1820 (a misidentification)
Chrysopilus binotatus Loew, 1869
Chrysopilus nubecula binotatus (Loew, 1869)
Leptis bicolor Meigen, 1820 partim nec Fabricius, 1794 (a misidentification)

Some authors regard C. nubecula and C. binotatus as separate species or as subspecies of the same species. However, Krivosheina (2008) pictured the male genitalia of specimens identified either as C. nubecula or C. binotatus. The genitalia are very similar and I therefore regard both names as synonyms
. In addition, some authors regard C. auricollis as a synonym of C. nubecula. However, the genital morphology studied by Krivosheina (2008) shows that C. auricollis is not a synonym of C. nubecula (see C. luteolus).

Some authors adjust the species epithet to the male gender of the genus name. However, nubecula is a latin noun (meaning "little cloud") and has female gender. It is thus not an adjective that can be adjusted to the genus name, but is a noun in apposition that does not change.
