Chrysopilus nigritus

Meigen (1820) was able to study the collection of Fabricius and noted that the female specimen in Fabricius´ collection that was labelled "Atherix nigrita" was in fact another species, namely Chrysopilus luteolus
. It is unclear whether there were additional specimens of "Atherix nigrita" that were also misidentified, but his assumption that at least a portion of Fabricius´ types were mixed up by later workers ("hier ist wohl eine Verwechslung vorgefallen"), likely motivated Meigen (1820) to give a new name to this species. I do not follow Meigen´s notion here, because the nominal Rhagio nigrita Fabricius, 1794 is a well-defined taxon even without the original type material. Thus the possibly heterogenous type-series is no serious problem and a new name is not necessary.




Identification
This species is very similar to Chrysopilus atratus. Jizz identification involves the scattered golden hairs on the posterior part of the thorax; these identify the present species, but be aware that older specimens might be worn off and thus resemble Chrysopilus atratus in this respect. Wing venation can be used to distinguish between the species: measure the crossveins m1-m2, m2-m3, and r-m. The values for the two species are given in the table below:
