Drapetis marginata
Meigen, 1838 (p. 100) (nec Smith, 1962)
Note: this is a nomen dubium and cannot be
identified with any Hybotidae of Europe. The
description given by Meigen (1838) depicts a
rather unique Drapetis (especially the white
segmental margins, hence the name!). Thus,
Drapetis marginata is probably a synonym of
another European fly species, not necessarily
a Hybotidae. There is, however, also the
possibility that Drapetis marginata might be a
valid species and has not been found again
since the description by Meigen.
Note: Drapetis marginata Smith, 1962 (now
Elaphropeza marginata (Smith, 1962)),
described from Brazil, is a primary junior
homonym. Because both taxa are not currently
regarded as being congeneric, there is no need
to replace the younger homonym. However, I
have found that the two names (and probably
other unreplaced homonyms) cause confusion in
the computer generated biodiversity databases
(e.g. globalspecies.org, eol.org, gbif.org)
and in the extreme case the "species" is then
listed for Brazil and Germany. Thus, it might
be wise to replace the junior homonym, or the
quality of the computer generated biodiversity
databases should be improved.
Identification
Distribution
Only known from the
original description. Meigen (1838) does not
give a specific locality; however, he writes "im
Julius auf Waldgras" (on forest grass in July)
thus indicating that the species is not a
foreign one, but lived in the vicinity where
Meigen lived (Stolberg near Aachen).
