Gagné
(2004) lists this species twice: (1) as Lestremia albipennis Waltl,
1837
and (2) as Lestremia albipennis Meigen, 1838. However, Gagné
does not
recognize, that both names actually refer to the same species. He
therefore regards the Meigen name as a junior homonym of the Waltl name
and gives a new name, Lestremia albidipennis, for the Meigen name. The
species has actually been described as new by Waltl (1837). He
describes this species from Passau (a city in Bavaria) with the
following description: "Rückenschild glänzend schwarz
(Hinterleib fehlt). Beine dunkelbraun. Flügel weiß,
glashell" (translation: "Thoracic shield shining black (abdomen is
missing). Legs dark brown. Wings white, transparent"). Meigen (1838)
also describes a species named Lestremia albipennis without mentioning
a previous authority and thus giving the impression that he is the
author. Meigen´s description reads: "Glänzend schwarz, Beine
braun, Flügel weiß. Aus Baiern, auch aus hiesiger Gegend"
(translation: Shining black, legs brown, wings white. From Bavaria,
also known from around here [i.e. near Aachen (Germany), where Meigen
lived]"). Thus, it is
quite clear that Meigen was only copying the description by Waltl
without
referencing this author.
This species is listed by Gagné (2004), but
is not recognized by most other authors. I
agree that it cannot really be identified from the very brief original
descriptions by Waltl and by Meigen. It is not even clear that it
actually is a
species of Lestremia. Unfortunately, the type(s) appear to have been
lost; thus it will be very difficult to determine the nature of this
species.
