Aphoebantus scutellatus

< Previous    |    Next >

Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized.

Synonyms
Anthrax scutellata Meigen, 1835 (p. 67)
Cononedys scutellata (Meigen, 1835)
Aphoebantus scutellatus (Meigen, 1835)
Type locality: "Umgegend von Muenchen" (surroundings of Munich, Germany).

The generic placement of this species is debated. Prpic (2016) points out that the evidence for monophyly of Cononedys and the evidence for monophyly of Aphoebantus s.str. without the species placed in Cononedys is both very weak. I therefore retain the concept of Aphoebantus in the wide sense that is likely monophyletic as discussed in Hull (1973).

Distribution
The occurrence of this species in Germany is reported contradictorily in the World Catalog editions. It is listed for Germany in the World Catalog (Evenhuis and Greathead 1999), but this is retracted in the revised version of the catalog (Evenhuis and Greathead 2003). However, neither the original record for Germany, nor its retraction is explained.
However, as pointed out by Prpic (2016), the species should be regarded as belonging to the German fauna, because the type locality of this species is near Munich (Meigen 1835) as given in the title of the original publication "Neue Arten von Diptern aus der Umgegend von Muenchen" (translation: "new species of Dipterans from around Munich"). In addition, Meigen (1838) later wrote "Ich erhielt sie von Dr. Waltl aus Baiern" (translation: "I obtained them [i.e. the specimens] from Bavaria from Dr. Waltl".
