Bolitophila nana

Subspecies

Original description

Synonyms
Macrocera nana Macquart, 1826
Bolitophila nana (Macquart, 1826)

Note: this is a nomen dubium. The original description is insufficient for identification. This explains why the name previously has been tentatively placed in the Keroplatidae, but is now regarded as an unidentifiable species of Bolitophila (see Evenhuis 2006; Bechev and Chandler 2011). Given the fact that Bolitophila nana cannot be identified, the recent reports of this taxon from Germany are likely to be misidentifications (see also Distribution below). These reports are dubious and the identity of the specimens should be checked.

Identification

Distribution
The original description is based on an unspecified number of specimens from France. Since the identity of these specimens is unclear (and the type(s) have not yet been located in Macquart´s collection) the name is a nomen dubium. The record of Bolitophila nana (as "Macrocera nana") from Germany is therefore dubious and probably refers to misidentified specimens of a true Macrocera (Keroplatidae) species.
