Entomobrya atrocincta

Identification
Tiny species, size 1,25-1,50 mm. Overall colour
light yellow, with dark
brownish-violet colour on the upper side of
thoracic segment 2 and 3
and abdominal segment 1. The animals are covered
by tiny and hyaline
scales that are not visible under normal light
microscopy and have only
been discovered by scanning electron microscopy
(Simon 2008).
Distribution
Described from California (USA), but
cosmopolitan in warm areas. First
and so far only record from Germany is from Gernsheim
(Hessen) in 2004; the
species is established
there, as specimens have been collected in
subsequent years, too (Simon
2008). Europe: Known from Spain, France, Czech
Republic. (Simon 2008).
Rest of world: USA (California), Australia, Asia
(Georgia). (Simon
2008).
Biology
Phenology: specimens known from Germany have
been collected between
June and July and have been found overwintering.
(Simon 2008).
Habitat: Record from Germany from the upper
regions of an apple tree.
The species requires hot and dry summers and wet
winters without snow.
