Placosternus crinicornis
Mesquite borer, Algaroba borer

Synonyms
Cylene crinicornis (Chevrolat, 1862)
Cyllene crinicornis (Chevrolat, 1862)
Placosternus crinicornis (Chevrolat, 1862)
Cyllene difficilis (Chevrolat, 1862)
Placosternus difficilis (Chevrolat, 1862)

Both taxa described by Chevrolat are currently considered to be synonyms. Both names are used in the recent literature and I am not aware of a revision of this nomenclatural problem. Therefore, I provisionally use the name crinicornis, because this is the name under which the species has been recorded from Germany.

Identification

Distribution
This species occurs in Central and South America, but is frequently introduced elsewhere with infested wood products. The Mesquite wood is used for making furniture, and it is especially popular as barbecue wood, because it is said to add a special flavour to the meat. The wood is therefore sold worldwide. There is at least one report of this species in Germany (Koehler and Klausnitzer 1998).

Biology
The larvae live in different species of Mesquite trees.
