There is a nominal species Telephorus nigricornis which is mentioned by
Le Comte de Castelnau (Le Comte de Castelnau M (1840). Histoire Naturelle des Animaux
Articulés, Annelides, Crustacés, Arachnides, Myriapodes
et Insectes. Histoire Naturelle des Insectes,
Coléoptères. Volume 1. P. Duménil, Paris. p.
274.). The type locality is given as "Allemagne". The identity of this
taxon is unclear to me. It is listed as an endemic species of Cantharis
(Cantharis nigricornis Castelnau, 1840; nec Letzner, 1846) in the Fauna
Europaea Web Service (2004). However, it is not recognized in any of
the other works on the German fauna.
Indeed, the original description is the only reference that I am aware
of that mentions this species. The text is very short: "MÉG. --
Long. 2 lig. 1/4. Larg. 2/4 lig. -- Jaune-rougeâtre; les
élytres plus claires; antennes noires, á l´exeption
de la base; dessous du corps noir. -- Allemagne." This description
itself is too general to identify the species. The description gives a
reference to another author "MÉG." who obviously has mentioned
or described this species as well, but this does not help, because I am
not certain who is identified by the author abbreviation. Possibly, it
refers to the French entomologist Mégnin; however, Mégnin
was only twelve years old at the time of the publication of
Castelnau´s work.
In addition, Barovskij (Barovskij VV (1926). Cantharidides asiatiques
nouveaux (Coleoptera). Revue Russe d´Entomologie 20, 235-244)
uses the name Cantharis nigricornis when he describes a new subspecies
Cantharis nigricornis nigropubescens. However, this name is now
regarded as a synonym of Cantharis forticornis Heyden, 1885, which is a
central Asian species and does not occur in Germany.
In summary, the identity of the nominal Telephorus nigricornis is
unclear. I suggest that the name is a synonym of one of the other
reddish-brown German species. It is currently not possible for me to
say which one, but C. quadripuncata is a possibility, especially
because Letzner independently (?) chose the name nigricornis for this
species as well.

A rare species,
only in the low mountain ranges of Central Europe the species is
sometimes more common. Recorded from Germany,
Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland.
