The nomenclature of this species is currently confused. The name epithet violacea was published by Paykull in 1798 in the genus Cantharis. However, Linnaeus has described the name epithet violacea in 1767 for a tropical species ("Guinea") in the genus Cantharis as well. This renders Cantharis violacea Paykull, 1798 a junior primary homonym of Cantharis violacea Linnaeus, 1767, and thus it is permanently invalid.

Some authors therefore regard Ancistronycha cyanipennis (Faldermann, 1835) as the valid name for this species. However, the cyanipennis epithet has been described as Cantharis cyanipennis Faldermann, 1835 for an asian species now placed in the genus Cordicantharis. Thus Ancistronycha cyanipennis (Faldermann, 1835) is not a synonym of the nominal Cantharis violacea Paykull, 1798.

The next available name would be Ancistronycha tigurina Dietrich, 1857. However, I refrain from declaring this name as the valid name for the species. Although Cantharis violacea Paykull, 1798 is a junior homonym of Cantharis violacea Linnaeus, 1767, the name by Linnaeus belongs to an (to my knowledge) unidentifed species and has not been used since. In addition the name by Paykull is well established for the present species, and I therefore accept it as the valid name for the species until a comprehensive revision of the genus is performed.
