The status of the subspecies chinensis, cupreomaculata and yanoi (from
Japan, China, or northern Asia) is doubtful; they might be identical. In
addition, the taxon dicercoides might also be identical with these,
because Holynski (2006)
reports on a specimen from Russia that is intermediate between
chinensis and dicercoides and cannot be placed with confidence in any
subspecies.
The status of the taxa populialbae and setulosa is debated; some authors
synonymize them with the nominate form, but I follow here Bellamy (2008)
who recognizes them as separate subspecies from northern Africa and the
Iberian Peninsula, and south-eastern Europe, respectively.
Only the nominate subspecies occurs in Germany.

Note: the taxon Buprestis plebeia Fabricius, 1777 (p. 236) (misspelled as plebeja in Bellamy (2008))
has sometimes been regarded as a synonym of the present species. However,
Fabricius (1777) writes "habitat in Indiis". Although at the time "India"
referred not only to the current political State of India, but also to additional parts
of south-eastern Asia, the present species is not known to occur in this region.
The description is very vague and also does not identify the species. Thus,
the name is best viewed as a nomen dubium that does not belong in the
synonymy of the present species. However, later uses of the name plebeia
indeed refer to the present species.
Note: Poecilonota variolosa lugdunensis Rey, 1890 and Poecilonota
variolosa tremulae Abeille de Perrin, 1896 are included here in the
synonymy, contra Bellamy (2008) and instead following Holynski (2006).
Bellamy lists these taxa as synonyms of Poecilonota variolosa
populialbae, but this must be an error, because these taxa have been
described from France, where Poecilonota variolosa populialbae does not
occur.
