Identification
Species with striking sexual dimorphism of the snout: the proboscis of the female is much longer than in the male.


Distribution
Originally in southern Europe, through western Asia and east to Central Asia. Since the 1990s the species is spreading north and is now quite frequent in Germany.


Biology
In Germany mostly on Alcea rosea (Malvaceae), which is a popular ornamental plant in gardens, but also reported to feed on Althea spec. and Gossypium spec. (both Malvaceae as well).
