Identification


Distribution
Recorded in most of North Africa, Europe and east to central Asia. Widely distributed in Germany but usually not common. It is not currently threatened in Germany, but because it is specialized on a single host plant species it might be vulnerable to changes in the occurence of the host plant.


Biology
Prefers dry and warm habitats. The larvae are reported to feed solely on Rumex acetosella, but the imagines may feed on other Rumex species as well. The larvae eat tunnels in the roots of the host plant and also pupate there. The imagines of the next generation eclose in May and June and they overwinter in the soil around the host plant. The ichneumonid wasp Zaglyptus multicolor (=fairmairii) has been reported as a parasite of the present species.
