Tegenaria pagana
Wärmeliebende Winkelspinne

Subspecies
Some authors recognize two separate subspecies (pagana and urbana). However, there seems to be no sound evidence to distinguish these forms and both are sympatric. I therefore follow Dahl (1931) and regard these names as synonyms. I do not recognize any subspecies of Tegenaria pagana.

Note: this species is placed in Malthonica by most authors. However, the analysis by Bolzern et al. 2010 clearly shows that Malthonica and Tegenaria are not monophyletic if both are recognized as separate taxa. I therefore combine both genera under the older name of Tegenaria. For more information on this issue see my comments under Tegenaria ferruginea.

Identification

Biology
This species requires a warm climate and is therefore only sporadically found in Central Europe; in Germany a very rare species. It lives under stones, but can also be found inside buildings, especially in areas with a cooler climate. Thus, in Germany the species is predominantly synanthropic.
