This course provides an introduction to the specifics of language structure and language function. After a general introduction to the nature and structure of the English language, we study the various components of a language, such as speech sounds (phonetics and phonology), words and their internal structure (morphology), phrases and sentence structure (syntax), meaning of words and sentences (semantics), and meaning of utterances in communication (pragmatics). In addition, we look at the relations between language and society, language and communication, and language and education.

Requirements: full participation + tutorial + written examination.

How to access the handouts and literature:

Login on wuecampus moodle programme. Then click on the Introduction to English Linguistics course. You are provided with handouts to each session and reading assignments. there is also a folder called 'literature' with additional and detailed literature to each topic. Please print off each handout and bring it along to the session in order to take notes. Presentations given in class will not be downloaded onto the moodle platform.
