HAUPTSEMINAR:
KING ARTHUR

SS 10
Wd 14-16, SEP 0.244 (Medienraum)
Oliver M. Traxel

Everyone interested in medieval England has come across his name. But who was King Arthur really and how did he transform into the literary figure that is so remote from his historical origins? We will trace representations of the Arthurian legend throughout the medieval period on the basis of the most important texts written in Middle English, which will be read in the original. Versions written in other languages, in particular Old French and Middle High German, will also be considered on the basis of translations. Finally, the importance of King Arthur for the study of medieval England as well as modern popular transformations of the legend will be discussed.
