LECTURE:
MIDDLE ENGLISH LITERATURE

SS 10
Th 14-16, Room ZHG 006
Oliver M. Traxel

This lecture provides a survey of vernacular literature during the Middle English period from the earliest texts written after the Anglo-Saxon period until the introduction of printing by William Caxton towards the end of the fifteenth century. During this time we find numerous literary genres in both prose and poetry, such as romances, allegories, lyrics and drama. Both anonymous works and those written by some important authors, such as Chaucer, Gower and Malory, will be presented and examined in their historical and cultural context.
