The popularity of Arthurian literature in the Middle Ages is evident in a large number of texts dating from this period. The focus in this seminar is on five particular Middle English texts dealing with this subject matter, which will be discussed with regard to their literary and cultural significance. Each text will also be partly translated in order to illustrate varieties of Middle English. Further aspects to be discussed are the historical background, non-English medieval Arthurian texts as well as post-medieval Arthuriana. Course material will be made available in electronic form.
