Subspecies
The taxon stackelbergi was previously considered
as a subspecies of the present species, but is in fact a separate
species Tipula stackelbergi Alexander, 1934, that does not occur in
Europe (
Salmela 2012).
The status of the taxa usuriensis Alexander, 1925 and sinapruinosa Yang et Yang, 1993 is currently unclear.
Salmela (2012)
suggests that they are synonyms of the present species and I
provisionally follow this notion here, and therefore do not recognize
any subspecies of the present species. However, these eastern Asian
populations do differ slightly in coloration and male genitalia
morphology, and therefore subspecies status for the two taxa may better
reflect their beginning genetic differentiation.

The taxon Tipula subpruinosa Mannheims, 1954 has previously been regarded as a synonym of the present species, but
Salmela (2012)
considers it as a synonym of Tipula freyana (a species that does not
occur in Germany). I follow this notion here and do not include
subpruinosa in the synonymy of the present species.
