Identification
Body size of the male slightly above 2 mm, female unknown. The species differs from other Ctenosciara species
by its bi-colored appearance: a bright orange thorax and a dark brown
abdomen. The thorax and abdomen of Ctenosciara lutea are light yellow to
whitish, the thorax and abdomen of Ctenosciara hyalipennis (and related taxa) is brown.
Distribution
This species is so far only known from the single specimen collected in
2014 at the type locality in Bonn (Nordrhein-Westfalen). However,
Heller and Rulik (2016)
note that the COI gene sequence of that specimen matches sequences
obtained from unidentified Ctenosciara specimens collected in New
Zealand. The authors suggest that the new species either also occurs in
New Zealand, or that a very similar species that does not differ in its
COI sequence exists in New Zealand. When compared to all Ctenosciara species known from New Zealand
Ctenosciara alexanderkoenigi is most similar to Ctenosciara nigrostyla
Mohrig, 1999, but it differs in coloration and details of male genital
morphology (
Heller and Rulik 2016). Thus, if Ctenosciara alexanderkoenigi originally is a New Zealand species, it is still undiscovered in its home country.
Heller and Rulik (2016)
point out that the garden of the Museum Alexander Koenig where the new
species was collected is home to a large number of exotic plants and
thus there is the plausible possibility that Ctenosciara
alexanderkoenigi is not a native German species, but has been introduced
accidentally with ornamental plants.
Biology
The only known specimen has been collected in early June, thus suggesting a flight season during early summer.
