Note: when Meigen (1818) described this species he did not specify how many individual specimens he had for study. He mentions a male from Baumhauer´s collection, but he certainly had more specimens, including females, because the text description of Nematocera bicolor is inconsistent and appears to combine characters that Meigen later (Meigen 1830) used to separate two different species, namely Anisomera bicolor and Anisomera gaedii. Thus, the original description of Nematocera bicolor appears to be a mix of these two species and the identity of the species has to be fixed by a lectotype selection. I am, however, not aware of a published lectotype selection, but it appears as if there is consensus among current dipterists that the species with long antennae in the male is bicolor and the species with short antennae is gaedii and I therefore adopt this notion here. On this basis, I also place the taxon Anisomera longipes here: this taxon has been described by Loew (1865) specifically for the long-antenna species, but its true identity has remained obscure and it has been largely ignored by subsequent authors.
