This species can be found in older literature under the species-group name clypeata.
Zerche (1998)
has shown that the name clypeata was misapplied to the present species
and in fact applies to the species previously named Metopsia retusa.

The species is recorded from Germany from all Bundesländer. It is also
widely distributed in Europe and western Asia and is recorded from the
following countries: Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Belarus, Norway, Sweden,
Denmark, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Hercegovina,
Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, France, Ukraine,
western Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey.
