Aphthona abdominalis

Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized. However, the species is very variable and much of this variation is apparently related to geographic distribution. Therefore, I suspect that the present species might be a complex of closely related subspecies (or even species).

Note: Konstantinov (1998) has defined a neotype for the taxon abdominalis. However, he did not have topotypical specimens (Austria) available and therefore took a specimen from Ukraine. This action is unfortunate, because the species is known to be morphologically variable, and the populations in Austria (i.e. the original abdominalis) and in Ukraine (i.e. the newly defined abdominalis) may belong to separate subspecies or species. In fact, the neotype selection by Konstantinov may be invalid, because it does not fulfil all criteria of Article 75.3. of the Code, especially Article 75.3.6. is not met. A thorough revision of this potential species-complex is required which might also re-validate some of the taxa currently placed in synonymy (e.g. foudrasi, licetana).
