  • AnimalBase is a service of the Göttingen University Library offering free online access to digitised old zoological literature. Currently all original descriptions published between 1757 until 1769 are included. Concerning Auchenorrhyncha, there is a number of papers e.g. by Carl von Linné and Giovanni Antonio Scopoli.
Since further funding has become problematic, users are kindly requested to send a short opinion or review to Francisco Welter-Schultes in order to stress the importance of this project. [26th June 2006]

  • New literature references are now available on a separate page of my website. It will replace the earlier, irregular notes of the "Auchenorrhyncha-Rundbrief" and will focus on morphology, systematics, zoogeography and ecology of (central) European and western Palearctic Auchenorrhyncha. It will also include ecological issues of plant - herbivore relationships in a wider context as well as regional faunistic papers, "grey literature" and websites. Notices are welcome. Addenda will follow more or less periodically. [August 23rd 2004]

  • Thanks to long-lasting bioacoustic studies of Matija Gogala and Tomi Trilar (Ljubljana) the solution of the problem of Cicadetta montana (Scop.), the mountain cicada, has come within reach, at least for central Europe. Accordingly, there are at least three bioacoustically distinct species. The most important results were recently published in a paper which is freely available as pdf (344 KB). [Juli 15th 2004]

  • The elusive Keys to the Insects of the Far-Eastern USSR, Volume II, the Homoptera and Heteroptera (Hemiptera) have been translated into English and are now free available on the International Heteropterists’ Society's website. The Auchenorrhyncha section (pdf, 12,2 MB) was written by G.A. Anufriev and A.F. Emeljanov (1988) and comprises 514 pages. Other sections include the Aleyrodina, Aphidina, Coccinea, Heteroptera and Psyllina. [June 24th 2004]

  • Carl Ludwig Kirschbaum's Auchenorrhyncha collection rearranged

  • cover photo

Carl Ludwig Kirschbaum's Auchenorrhyncha in the Natural History Collection of the Museum of Wiesbaden have now been rearranged. These specimens are part of one of Europe's most important Hemiptera collections of the 19th century. Until recently, it was barely possible to detect a particular specimen, because the original order had been altered by several curators in the 1920s and 1970s without finishing the rearrangement. In addition, all specimens have now been entered into a database, parts of which are available online at the museum's website. The Auchenorrhyncha collection comprises more than 5.000 specimens including 333 types, mainly from western parts of Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy and Spain. [16.1.2004]

  • We are happy to announce the forthcoming volume I of a new identification key to Auchenorrhyncha:

Holzinger, W.E., Kammerlander, I., Nickel, H.: The Auchenorrhyncha of central Europe - Die Zikaden Mitteleuropas. Volume 1: Fulgoromorpha, Cicadomorpha excl. Cicadellidae. More information Subscription

For almost 70 years, this will be the first up-to-date identification work of the complete fauna of central and northern Europe. The text will be bilingual; the first volume will treat about 250 species and comprise 46 colour plates with altogether 738 photographs, 211 distribution maps and more than 1500 figures. We hope to present sample plates and chapters on the Potsdam congress.

The complete work is intended to treat more than 800 species, covering the whole fauna of central and northern Europe as well as the British Isles. It will include keys for identification, about 150 photographic plates and about 5000 drawings of genital organs and other structures relevant for identification, distribution maps as well as information on phenology, habitats, host plants, geographical and altitudinal distribution. The series shall be completed within the next five years. [August 1st 2002]

  • The new volume of the Beiträge zur Zikadenkunde has been printed last week, with a new Checklist of the Auchenorrhyncha species of Germany, which is now online and can be downloaded as pdf. It contains 620 species and provides data on food plants, diet width, overwintering stage, voltinism, geographic range, conservation status and, if necessary, taxonomic remarks, as well as a description of a new species. Explanations to the species list are bilingual German/English, a translation of the remaining sections will be online soon. The whole volume will be presented on the Potsdam congress, but can also be ordered through Dr. Werner Witsack (Halle). [July 23rd 2002]
